Big Powderhorn Mountain facts for kids
Big Powderhorn Mountain is a fun place to ski and snowboard! It's a ski resort located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in a place called Gogebic County. This mountain is part of the Gogebic Range. The very top of the mountain is 1,640 feet (500 meters) high. The bottom is 1,240 feet (378 meters) high. This means you get to ski down a 400-foot vertical drop!
The resort has 9 chairlifts. These lifts take you up the mountain. There are 45 different ski and snowboard trails. The ski area covers 253 acres (about 1 square kilometer). The trails are a mix of easy, medium, and difficult. So, there's something for everyone! Big Powderhorn also has two special areas called terrain parks. These parks have jumps and obstacles for tricks. If you like cross-country skiing, the Wolverine Nordic Trail connects right to the resort.
A New Lodge
On January 13, 2011, there was a fire at the main lodge building. Luckily, no one was hurt. The building was completely destroyed. Even with the fire, the resort opened the very next day! Skiers used the nearby Caribou Lodge as their main spot. A brand new lodge was built quickly. It opened for the 2012-2013 ski season.
