Big Stone City is a small city in the northeastern part of Grant County, South Dakota, United States. It's located right between the southern end of Big Stone Lake and the northern side of the Whetstone River. It's also very close to the city of Ortonville, Minnesota. In 2020, about 412 people lived there.

A Look at Big Stone City's Past
The area where Big Stone City is now was first settled in 1878. It was called Inkpa City back then, named after a chief called Inkpaduta. From 1880 to 1883, it was the main town, or "county seat," for Grant County. The city got its current name from the nearby Big Stone Lake. Big Stone City officially became a city in 1885.
