Big Stump Grove is a special place filled with amazing giant sequoia trees. It's located at the entrance of Kings Canyon National Park in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. This grove is one of several giant sequoia groves found close to each other in this beautiful area.
Why is it Called Big Stump Grove?
This grove got its name from a very old and famous tree. This tree is called Old Adam. Sometimes, people also call it the Burnt Monarch. Old Adam is a huge sequoia that was already dead before people started cutting trees in this area. Its large, old stump gave the grove its unique name.
Meet the Amazing Trees!
Big Stump Grove is home to some truly remarkable trees. Here are a few you might want to learn about:
- Mark Twain Stump: This is the stump of what was once one of the biggest giant sequoias in the world! The tree was cut down in 1891. Parts of its huge trunk were sent to museums in New York and London. This allowed many people to see just how enormous these trees could be. The rest of the tree was used for things like fence posts.
- The Sawed Tree: This giant sequoia has deep cuts on its trunk. These cuts were made a long time ago, in the late 1800s, using a crosscut saw. Even with these old scars, the tree is still perfectly healthy and growing strong today.
- Old Adam: This is a giant sequoia that has died. It looks very old and twisted, with a gnarled and decayed appearance. It's a reminder of the long lives these trees can live.
