Bijou Geyser is a fascinating geyser found in Yellowstone National Park in the United States. It is located in an area called the Upper Geyser Basin. Geysers are natural hot springs that erupt, sending hot water and steam into the air.
What is Bijou Geyser?
Bijou Geyser is known for its almost constant eruptions. It sends water up to 15 feet (4.6 m) high. Sometimes, the water changes into a column of steam. This means it's mostly steam coming out instead of water.
How Bijou Geyser Erupts
Bijou Geyser is part of a group of geysers called the Giant Group. It is connected underground to two other famous geysers: Giant Geyser and Grotto Geyser. Even though Bijou usually erupts all the time, there are moments when it stops. This can happen for a few reasons.
When Bijou Stops Erupting
There are three main situations that can cause Bijou Geyser to pause its activity:
- Rising Water Levels: Sometimes, Bijou stops because the water levels are rising on the Giant Platform. This is the raised area where the Giant Group geysers are located.
- Grotto Geyser's Long Eruptions: If Grotto Geyser has a very long eruption, called a "marathon play session," Bijou will slow down. After about five or six hours of Grotto erupting, Bijou might stop completely. It usually takes four to six hours after Grotto stops for Bijou to start erupting again.
- Giant Geyser's Hot Period: The third reason is called a "Giant Hot Period." This is a sign that Giant Geyser might be about to erupt. If Giant Geyser does erupt, Bijou Geyser needs at least eight hours to recover. After this time, it will begin erupting again.
