Growing Up and Starting Out

Bill Dubuque was born in St. Louis, Missouri. When he was a teenager, he spent time working near the Lake of the Ozarks. Today, he still lives in St. Louis with his wife and three children. They often visit the Lake of the Ozarks together.

Before becoming a screenwriter in 2008, Bill worked as a recruitment headhunter. This means he helped companies find and hire important people for their teams.

Creating Popular Stories

A producer named Mark Williams approached Bill with an idea for a movie. Bill developed this idea into a script called The Accountant. This script was so good that it made it onto the 2011 Black List. The Black List is a survey of the best movie scripts in Hollywood that haven't been made into films yet.

For The Accountant, Bill did a lot of research. He wanted to make the main character (played by Ben Affleck) have high-functioning autism. The organization Autism Speaks praised the movie for how it showed this condition.

Bill's first movie script to be produced was The Judge in 2012. After this, Variety magazine named him one of their "10 screenwriters to watch." His script for The Judge also made the 2012 Black List.

More Exciting Projects

In 2015, Bill successfully presented an idea for an action-adventure movie called The Real McCoy to Universal Pictures. The actor Chris Pratt was set to star in it.

Bill worked with producer Mark Williams again on the movie A Family Man. It was released in 2016. The original idea for this movie came from Bill's own experience as a headhunter.

His teenage experiences at an Ozarks resort inspired him to create the TV series Ozark. He worked with producer Mark Williams and actor Jason Bateman on this show. Ozark was released on Netflix in 2017. It quickly became popular and was renewed for more seasons. The writing team for Ozark was even nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award.

In 2019, Bill Dubuque became the screenwriter for the movie version of The Six Million Dollar Man.
