Bill Dubuque's Life and Career
Early Life and Inspiration
Bill Dubuque was born in St. Louis, Missouri. When he was a teenager, he spent time working at the Lake of the Ozarks. This area later inspired some of his creative work. He still lives in St. Louis with his wife and three children. They often visit the Lake of the Ozarks together.
Starting as a Screenwriter
Before becoming a screenwriter in 2008, Dubuque worked as a recruitment headhunter. This means he helped companies find the right people for important jobs.
His journey into screenwriting began when producer Mark Williams shared an idea for a movie called The Accountant. Dubuque developed this idea into a full script. To make the main character believable, he researched high-functioning autism. The film was praised by organizations like Autism Speaks for showing the disorder well.
In 2011, The Accountant script was named to the Black List. This is a list of the best movie scripts that haven't been made yet in Hollywood.
First Produced Films and TV Shows
Dubuque's first movie script to be produced was The Judge in 2014. This success led Variety magazine to name him one of their "10 screenwriters to watch." His script for The Judge also appeared on the 2012 Black List.
In 2015, Dubuque successfully suggested an action-adventure movie called The Real McCoy to Universal Pictures. Actor Chris Pratt was set to star in it.
Another movie he worked on with producer Mark Williams was A Family Man, released in 2016. This film was originally called The Headhunter's Calling. Its story was based on Dubuque's own experiences working in recruitment.
His teenage memories of the Ozarks also led him to create the TV series Ozark. He worked on this show with producer Mark Williams and actor Jason Bateman. Ozark was released on Netflix in 2017 and quickly became very popular. The writing team for Ozark was even nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award. The series ran until 2022.
In April 2019, Dubuque became the screenwriter for the movie version of The Six Million Dollar Man. More recently, in September 2024, he wrote and was an executive producer for the Netflix series His & Hers.
