William Franklin Goodling (born December 5, 1927, died September 17, 2017) was an American politician. He was a Republican and served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Pennsylvania. This means he was a lawmaker who helped make decisions for the country. Later in his life, he led an organization that helps families learn to read.
About Bill Goodling's Early Life
Bill Goodling was born in Loganville, Pennsylvania. His father, George Atlee Goodling, was also a Congressman. Bill grew up in York, Pennsylvania.
He went to college and earned degrees from the University of Maryland and Western Maryland College. He also studied at Pennsylvania State University. Before becoming a politician, he worked as a teacher and school leader in Pennsylvania. He also served in the United States Army for two years. Later, he was part of the Dallastown school board and even became its president. Bill Goodling passed away on September 17, 2017.

Goodling was chosen to be a Congressman in 1974. He was a member of the Republican Party.
In 1995, his party became the majority in the House of Representatives. This meant they had more members than the other party. Because of this, Bill Goodling became the leader of an important group called the United States House Committee on Education and Labor. This committee works on laws about schools and jobs. He stopped working in public service in 2001.
