Early Life and School
William Shine grew up in East Northport, a town on Long Island. He has a twin sibling. His father worked as a police officer in New York City.
Shine went to the State University of New York at Oswego. There, he earned a degree in communications. After college, he started working in television. In 1985, he became a producer for local TV stations on Long Island. One of his first jobs was at WLIG-TV.
Career at Fox News
Shine began his career at Fox News as a senior producer. He worked on the show Hannity & Colmes. By 1999, he was a senior producer for the prime-time shows at Fox News. The next year, he became the executive producer for these programs.
In 2001, some psychics appeared on Fox News shows. They talked about a missing person case. Shine explained that having psychics on TV was "part of the story." He said they offered "another opinion" or "another side of the story."
By 2004, Shine was the vice president of production for Fox News. The next year, he became the senior vice president of programming. In 2005, he was asked why more stories about missing white women were shown than missing black women. Shine said that national stories often have a "twist or an emotional aspect" that makes them interesting.
In 2007, a Fox News host, Bill O'Reilly, visited a soul-food restaurant in Harlem. He was surprised that it was a normal, fun place. Shine responded to criticism of O'Reilly's comments. He said it was "left-wing outlets stirring up false racism accusations."
In 2009, Fox News host Glenn Beck made comments about President Barack Obama. Beck said Obama had "a deep-seated hatred for white people." Shine said Beck was sharing his "personal opinion." He added that Beck's views were "not those of the Fox News Channel." Shine also mentioned that a vice president was assigned to oversee Beck's show.
In 2014, Shine was promoted again. He became the senior executive vice president of programming at Fox News. He worked closely with the chairman, Roger Ailes, for 20 years. After Ailes left, Rupert Murdoch named Shine and Jack Abernethy as co-presidents of Fox News in 2016. Shine was in charge of the network's news and programming.
In April 2017, there were reports that Shine was unsure about his future at Fox. A Fox spokesperson said these reports were not true. Fox host Sean Hannity supported Shine. He said it would be "the total end of the FNC as we know it" if Shine left. On May 1, 2017, Shine left Fox News. Suzanne Scott took his place as co-president.
Working for President Trump
In June 2018, Shine accepted a job in the Trump administration. He became a White House Deputy Chief of Staff. His job was to manage communications within the White House. His appointment became official on July 5, 2018.
On March 8, 2019, the White House announced that Shine was leaving his role. He resigned to become an advisor for President Trump's 2020 election campaign. Shine stated that he was "looking forward to working on President Trump's re-election campaign." He also said he wanted to spend "more time with family."
After the White House
In March 2021, it was reported that Mr. Shine was working as a consultant. He was helping a new cable news network called NewsNation. This network is based in Chicago. Staff at NewsNation did not know about his involvement until an article was published.
