Early Life and Education
William Shine grew up in East Northport, New York, on Long Island, New York. He has a twin sibling. His father was a police officer in New York City. His family was Irish Catholic.
Shine studied communications at the State University of New York at Oswego. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. After college, he started working as a producer for local TV stations. This began in 1985 at WLIG-TV on Long Island.
Career at Fox News
Shine joined Fox News as a senior producer. He worked on the show Hannity & Colmes. By 1999, he was a senior producer for prime-time shows at Fox News. The next year, he became the executive producer for the channel's main evening programs.
In 2001, Fox News Channel featured psychics on some shows. They discussed topics like missing persons. Shine explained that these discussions were "part of the story." He said they offered "another opinion, another side of the story."
By 2004, Shine was the vice president of production for Fox News Channel. The following year, he became the senior vice president of programming. In 2005, he commented on why some missing person stories get more national attention. He said these stories often have "a twist or an emotional aspect" that makes them interesting.
In 2014, Shine was promoted again. He became the senior executive vice president of programming for Fox News Channel. He worked closely with the network's chairman, Roger Ailes, for 20 years. After Ailes left, Rupert Murdoch named Shine and Jack Abernethy as co-presidents of Fox News in August 2016. Shine was in charge of the network's news and programming.
Shine left Fox News on May 1, 2017. Suzanne Scott took his place as co-president.
Working with President Trump
In June 2018, Bill Shine accepted a job in the Trump administration. He became a Deputy White House Chief of Staff. His role was to oversee communication within the White House. His appointment became official on July 5, 2018.
On March 8, 2019, the White House announced that Shine was leaving his position. He resigned to become an advisor for President Trump's 2020 presidential campaign. Shine stated that he was "looking forward to working on President Trump's re-election campaign." He also mentioned wanting to spend more time with his family. In May 2019, the acting White House Chief of Staff, Mick Mulvaney, said he did not plan to replace Shine with a new communications director.
After the White House
In March 2021, it was reported that Mr. Shine had been working as a consultant. He was helping a new cable news network called NewsNation. This network is based out of WGN in Chicago. Staff members at NewsNation reportedly did not know about his involvement until a news article appeared.
