History of East Northport

How East Northport Started

After the village of Huntington was set up, English settlers wanted to find more land. On July 30, 1656, they bought land from Chief Asharoken. He was the leader of the Matinecocks Native American tribe. Part of this land is where East Northport is today.

Early Communities: Larkfield and Clay Pitts

Two different communities grew in the area that is now East Northport. The larger one was called Larkfield. It was located in the northern part, close to Vernon Valley, which is now part of Northport. Larkfield first grew near Genola Cemetery. This is just north of where Larkfield Road, Vernon Valley Road, and Laurel Road meet today.

The second community was in the southern part and was called Clay Pitts. It got its name because there was a lot of red clay there. Native Americans used this clay to make pottery. Later, Europeans used it to make bricks for buildings. The land between Larkfield and Clay Pitts was good for farming. In the late 1700s, the area became a busy farming community. They sent their crops to markets in New York City and Brooklyn.

Naming East Northport

In 1868, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) opened a train station in the village of Northport. A few years later, the LIRR moved the Northport station to a new spot in Larkfield. This move helped them extend the railway further to Port Jefferson.

The new train station opened on January 13, 1873. It was located at Larkfield Road and Bellerose Avenue. Even though it was a new location, it kept the name "Northport." However, train conductors often called it "East of Northport." This was because the station was east of the railway junction that used to send trains north to the old station. Even though East Northport is mostly south of Northport, the area became known as East Northport. The Larkfield Post Office officially changed its name to East Northport in 1910. In 1998, the East Northport post office building was renamed the Jerome Anthony Ambro, Jr. Post Office Building.

East Northport's Growth

After World War II, many Americans moved from big cities to suburban areas. Long Island saw a huge increase in its population. East Northport's population grew quickly as farms turned into modern suburbs with many new homes. Today, East Northport is the largest community in the town of Huntington by land size. It is the third largest in population, after Huntington Station and Dix Hills.
