William Evans Midwinter (born June 19, 1851 – died December 3, 1890) was a famous cricket player. He played in Test matches for both England and Australia. This makes him very unique in cricket history. He is the only player to have played for Australia and England in Test matches against each other.

Billy Midwinter: A Cricket Pioneer

Billy Midwinter was born in England. But he moved to Australia when he was just nine years old. He grew up to be a talented cricketer.

His First Test Match

Billy made his Test debut in 1877. This was a very special match. It was the first-ever Test match in history! He played for Australia against England. This was the country where he was born. In that game, he took five wickets in the first innings. This helped Australia win the match in Melbourne.

He also played in the second Test of that series. He scored 31 runs, which was his personal best at the time.

A Unique Cricket Journey

After playing for Australia, Billy returned to England. He joined WG Grace's Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. In 1878, he was supposed to tour England with the Australian team. But something unusual happened.

Billy was about to play a match at Lord's. Then, WG Grace convinced him to play for Gloucestershire instead. Billy left the Australian tour. He stayed with Gloucestershire until 1882.

In 1881/82, Billy was chosen to play for the England team. They toured Australia. He played four Test matches for England. Then, in 1882/83, he returned to Australia. He joined the Victoria team.

Later, he was picked to play for Australia again. This was for a Test match in 1883/84. He also toured England with the Australian team in 1884. This makes him the only player to play for one international team, then another, and then go back to his first team.

Later Life

Sadly, Billy Midwinter faced many difficulties later in his life. He passed away in 1890 at the age of 39. He is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery in Australia.
