The Bindal language (also known as Bendalgubba or Nyawaygi) was an Aboriginal language from North Queensland, Australia. Sadly, it is now extinct, meaning it is no longer spoken by anyone.

The Bindal language was once spoken in a large area. This area stretched from Cape Cleveland south towards Ayr. It also included the mouth of the Burdekin River. This region covers parts of what are now the Townsville City Council and Burdekin Shire Council.

What is the Bindal Language?

When we study languages, we often try to group them into "families." This helps us understand how they are related. For the Bindal language, experts have different ideas about its family.

How Bindal is Classified

One idea comes from a language expert named Bowern. He thinks Bindal might have been a Maric language. The Maric languages are a group of Aboriginal languages.

Another expert, Breen, studied two Lower Burdekin languages. He believed these languages were not Maric. He thought one of them might have been Bindal. So, while we know Bindal was an important language, its exact family tree is still being explored!
