The Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society is a special magazine about the history of science. It is published every year by the Royal Society. This magazine shares life stories, called obituaries, of important scientists who were members of the Royal Society.
The magazine started in 1932. Back then, it was called Obituary Notices of Fellows of the Royal Society. In 1955, it got its current name. Before 1932, these life stories were published in another magazine called Proceedings of the Royal Society.
What are the Memoirs?
These memoirs are very important historical records. They help us learn about the lives of great scientists. Most of them include a full list of all the books and papers the person wrote. This list is called a bibliography.
Who Writes Them?
Often, these life stories are written by another scientist. This might be a student of the person who passed away. Or it could be a close friend or colleague. Many times, the author is also a member of the Royal Society.
Famous People Featured
The magazine has published stories about many famous people. These include Albert Einstein, Alan Turing, and Erwin Schrödinger. It also features Bertrand Russell, Claude Shannon, and Clement Attlee. Even Ernst Mayr has a story in this journal.
How It Works
Each year, about 40 to 50 life stories are put together. These are about members of the Royal Society who have passed away. The main person in charge of this is called the Editor-in-Chief. Currently, this is Malcolm Longair.
