The MD of Bonnyville was officially created on January 1, 1955. This happened when two smaller areas, the Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87 and the Municipal District of Glendon No. 88, joined together. Part of another area called Improvement District No. 101 also became part of the new MD. More recently, on May 1, 2021, the MD of Bonnyville grew even larger by adding the nearby Improvement District No. 349.
