A Look Back: Birchwood's History

The land around Birchwood has a very long and interesting history.

Native American Roots

Long ago, Native American tribes lived here. A famous Cherokee leader named John Jolly had a trading post on Hiwassee Island. This island is just north of where Birchwood is today. Even Sam Houston, who later became a famous leader, lived on Hiwassee Island for about three years starting in 1809.

Early Settlers

The Roark family was one of the first groups of European settlers in the Cherokee lands. Joseph Roark's home was built around 1833. Today, the Roark-Conner Association still studies the family history and stories of Birchwood.

The Trail of Tears

Birchwood was also a stopping point during the Trail of Tears. This was a sad time when many Native Americans were forced to move from their homes. The Cherokee Removal Memorial Park and nearby Blythe Ferry remember this important part of history.

Birchwood's County Changes

For a while, much of Birchwood was part of a different county called James County, Tennessee. This county was created in 1871. But it was later dissolved in 1919, and Birchwood became part of Hamilton County again.
