Birthright, also known as Lone Star, is a small place in Hopkins County, Texas, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Birthright is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of Sulphur Springs.
History of Birthright
Birthright was started around 1870 by a man named E. C. Birthright. He opened a store there, which helped the community begin.
A post office opened in Birthright in 1871. Edward McLaughlin was the first person in charge of the mail. By 1885, the community was growing. It had four places that processed cotton (called mill-gins). There were also three churches and a school named Lone Star School.
A local newspaper, the Lone Star Appeal, began printing in Birthright by 1890. At that time, about 250 people lived in the community. However, the population later dropped to 85 people by 1925. The Lone Star School closed sometime between the 1930s and 1948. By the 1960s, the post office and most stores had closed down. Only two churches and a few homes remained. In 1990 and 2000, Birthright had a population of 40 people.
