Navarrete (also known as Villa Bisonó) is a lively municipality in the northwestern part of the Dominican Republic. It became an official municipality in 1961. This town is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) away from Santiago de los Caballeros, which is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic. The main center of Navarrete is the town of Villa Bisonó.
Navarrete is found in a flat area called the Cibao Valley. This valley is near the Yaque del Norte River. Long ago, this area was covered in forests. It was a "subtropical dry forest" ecosystem, meaning it had trees and plants that could live in warm, dry conditions. Now, much of the land is used for farming and raising animals.
The northern part of Navarrete municipality slowly rises into the hills of the Cordillera Septentrional, which is a mountain range.
The Yaque del Norte River forms the southern edge of the Navarrete municipality. To the south, across the river, is the area of La Canela. To the southwest and west is the Valverde Province. To the north is the municipality of Altamira, which is part of Puerto Plata Province. To the southeast is the municipality of Villa Gonzalez, and to the northeast is El Limon.
Towns and Neighborhoods
The main town in this area is Villa Bisonó. People often call it Navarrete. It was officially recognized in 1956. The town was named after José Elías Bisonó, who owned a lot of land there.
Villa Bisonó is located where two important highways meet: DR-1 and DR-5. The town has several different neighborhoods, often called barrios. These include:
- Barrio 27 de Febrero
- Barrio Los Candelones
- Barrio Duarte
- Barrio La Mella
- Barrio Nuevo (also known as Jeremias)
- Barrio Rotonda
- Barrio San Miguel
- Barrio Trinitaria
- Jalisco
Other smaller settlements in the municipality include Las Atravesadas, Cañada Bonita, Ponton, Pontoncito, El Estacion, and Villanueva.
In 1939, the area known as Navarrete was managed as a rural part of the Santiago municipality. Later, in 1956, the settlement of Villa Bisonó in Navarrete was officially recognized.
In the late 1950s, the area was made into a municipal district. It was still called Navarrete and was part of the Santiago municipality. Then, in 1962, the area was upgraded to a full municipality within the Santiago province. It was given the name "Bisonó." However, many people still refer to it as "Villa Bisonó" or "Navarrete."
