Bitdefender is a company from Romania that creates special computer programs. These programs help protect your computers, phones, and other devices from bad stuff online. Think of them as digital bodyguards!
The company started in 2001. Its founder, Florin Talpeș, is still in charge today. Bitdefender makes many different security products. These include programs to stop viruses and protect your devices when you use the internet. They also help businesses keep their computer systems safe.
Bitdefender's products are used in over 150 countries around the world. A big part of their business comes from the United States. In 2020, more than 1,600 people worked for Bitdefender worldwide. By 2021, it was one of the top companies for free anti-malware apps for Windows computers.
History
Before it was called Bitdefender, the software was known as AVX (Antivirus Expert). It was first made by a company called SOFTWIN in 1996. In 2001, the name changed to Bitdefender. Then, in 2007, Bitdefender became its own separate company.
Important Moments for Bitdefender
- 1990: SOFTWIN, one of the first computer companies in Romania after communism, was created. As computer viruses grew, SOFTWIN started making its AVX (AntiVirus eXpert) program.
- 2001: The Bitdefender company was officially formed. The AVX program was renamed Bitdefender.
- 2004: Bitdefender opened its first offices outside Romania. These were in the US, Germany, and the UK. Later, they expanded to the Middle East (2011) and Denmark (2015).
- 2007: Bitdefender became a separate business. This meant it could get money from outside investors.
- 2011: Bitdefender started offering security products for large businesses and virtual computer systems.
- 2015: Bitdefender launched new products for homes. One was called Bitdefender BOX, which helped protect all smart devices in a home.
- 2017: Bitdefender bought a French company called Profil Technology Source. This was their first big purchase. A British investment fund also bought a part of Bitdefender, showing the company was worth a lot of money.
- 2018: Bitdefender started a new branch in Australia. They also bought a company called RedSocks, which helps find unusual activity on computer networks.
- 2019: Bitdefender opened a special security center in Texas, USA. This center helps them watch for and respond to cyber threats.
- 2021: Bitdefender introduced a new system called XDR (extended detection and response). This helps businesses find and fix online threats faster.
- 2022: Bitdefender signed a deal to partner with Scuderia Ferrari, the famous car racing team.

Bitdefender has won many awards from AV-Comparatives. This is a company that tests how well different antivirus programs work.
