The black-spotted prominent (scientific name: Dasylophia anguina) is a type of moth. It belongs to the Notodontidae family. You can find this moth naturally in North America.

What Does the Black-Spotted Prominent Look Like?

This moth has a wingspan of about 3 to 4.1 centimeters (1.2 to 1.6 inches). Males and females look a bit different. This is called being sexually dimorphic.

Males have black streaks on the front part of their forewings. Females have a big yellow-brown patch in the same area. The back wings of males are white, while females have gray back wings. Both male and female moths have a clear, rounded line on their forewings. You can also see black spots near the bottom edge of their forewings.

The black-spotted prominent lives across a wide area in North America. Its range stretches from Manitoba in Canada, south to Quebec. It also lives as far south as Florida and reaches into northeastern Texas.

Adult black-spotted prominent moths fly from April to September. Their young, called caterpillars, can be found from May to November.
