Black Country Urban Forest facts for kids
The Black Country Urban Forest (BCUF) is a special project in The Black Country, an industrial area in England. It aims to turn this area into a place where trees and green spaces are everywhere.
It's not like a normal forest with just trees. Think of it more like a huge park or a "royal forest" from old times. But instead of being just for a few rich people, the BCUF is for everyone! It's a green space for all people to enjoy.

Why the Black Country Needed a Forest
The idea for the BCUF came from a big project called the "Millennium Forest." This was the largest urban forestry project ever done in the UK. It involved planting many trees and looking after woodlands in cities.
The Black Country includes the city of Wolverhampton and the areas of Dudley, Sandwell, and Walsall. This region was once the "forge" of the Industrial Revolution. This means it had many factories and mines.
Because of all this industry, a lot of land was left empty and damaged. Even a long time ago, groups like the Midland reafforesting association started planting trees. They turned old coal mining waste heaps into new woodlands. By the late 1900s, people wanted to plant even more trees.
How the Forest Grew
A successful early project was called "Treeways." This project focused on planting trees along roads and transport routes. It helped show how a bigger forest project could work.
Four main groups worked together on "Treeways." These were the National Urban Forestry Unit (NUFU), the Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), and Groundwork Black Country.
These groups then worked closely with the four local councils. Together, they planned the big Millennium Forest project. Even with some challenges, the project was a success. The idea of the BCUF continues to grow today.
What the Project Did
The Millennium Forest project did more than just plant trees. It also helped businesses that used wood from the forests. They also held events and activities to get local people involved. Studies were done to learn about the area's biodiversity (all the different types of plants and animals).
Funding the Forest
The Millennium Forest project received money from many places. The UK's Millennium Fund gave a lot of support. Other funds came from the UK government and Europe. Grants from the Forestry Commission and other sources also helped. The total cost was over £7 million.
A similar, even bigger project started in 2006/2007. This was the £50 million Black Country Urban Park.
Today, Groundwork Black Country shares responsibility for the Black Country Urban Forest. Landowners also help, as they signed a special 99-year agreement with the Millennium Commission. This agreement helps protect the forest for a very long time.
