Black Country Urban Forest facts for kids
The Black Country Urban Forest (BCUF) is a special project in The Black Country, an industrial area in England. Its goal is to make urban forestry a key part of the landscape.
The BCUF is not a forest like a big woodland you might imagine. Instead, it's more like an old idea of a Royal forest. This means it's a large area of land with many different uses and activities. The big difference is that the BCUF is for everyone to enjoy. It's a green space for all people living in the area.

How the Urban Forest Started
The Black Country Urban Forest grew from a project called the "Millennium Forest." This was the biggest urban forestry project ever done in the UK. It involved a huge effort to plant trees and manage woodlands in cities. This greatly increased the amount of woodland in the area.
The Black Country's Industrial Past
The Black Country is part of the West Midlands conurbation. It includes the city of Wolverhampton and the areas of Dudley, Sandwell, and Walsall. This region was very important during the Industrial Revolution. Because of this, it had many large areas of unused land.
Even in the late 1800s and early 1900s, groups like the Midland reafforesting association were planting new woodlands. They used old colliery tips and other suitable spots. By the end of the 20th Century, big goals were set. Plans were made for a huge increase in tree planting.
Developing the Urban Forest Project
A successful project called "Treeways" helped start the BCUF. This project focused on planting trees along transport routes. It acted as a test for bigger plans. Four main groups worked together on "Treeways." These were the National Urban Forestry Unit (NUFU), the Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), and Groundwork Black Country.
Working Together for Green Spaces
These groups then worked closely with the four local councils. Together, they proposed the big Millennium programme. Even with some challenges, the project was largely successful. The idea of the Black Country Urban Forest continues to grow today.
Besides planting trees, the project also managed existing woodlands. It supported businesses that used wood products. Events and activities were held to involve local communities. Studies were also done to learn about the area's biodiversity.
Funding the Green Vision
The Millennium Forest project received money from the UK's Millennium Fund. It also got funding from the UK government and Europe. Grants came from the Forestry Commission and many other places. The total cost for the project was over £7 million.
A similar and larger project began in 2006/2007. This was the £50 million Black Country Urban Park.
Today, Groundwork Black Country shares responsibility for the Black Country Urban Forest. Landowners also play a part. They signed a 99-year legal agreement with the Millennium Commission. This agreement helps protect the forest for a long time.
