The Black Dub is a small stream located in Cumbria, United Kingdom. It starts its journey in the west of a village called Langrigg. In this area, it is also known as Dub Stangs. The stream then flows west, passing by places like Scroggs Wood and the village of Westnewton.

The Journey of the Black Dub

The Black Dub is about seven miles (or eleven kilometers) long. As it continues its flow, it passes near the small communities of New Cowper and Edderside. Here, it acts as a natural border. It forms the southern edge of the area known as Holme St Cuthbert and the northern edge of Allonby. Finally, the Black Dub reaches the Solway Firth at a place called Dubmill, which is at the northern end of Allonby Bay.

A Look at Its History

The Black Dub has been mentioned in official records for a long time.

Stream Boundaries

In 1860, the stream was part of an important announcement in the London Gazette. This official newspaper stated that the middle of the Black Dub would become the boundary between the areas of Langrigg, Mealrigg, and Westnewton. This helped to clearly define where each area ended and began.

Helping with Water Flow

Later, in 1969, a special channel was dug. This channel connected the Black Dub to another nearby stream called Cross Beck, close to where they both meet the sea. This project was carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. It was done under a law called the Water Resources Act 1963. This channel helped to manage the water flow between the two streams.

Official Classification

The Black Dub is officially recognized as a "water feature" by Ordnance Survey. This is the national mapping agency of Great Britain.

Other Streams Joining In

Many smaller channels, which are used for irrigation (watering crops), flow into the Black Dub. Most of these smaller streams are found within the area of Holme St. Cuthbert.

Jordan Beck

The biggest stream that joins the Black Dub is called Jordan Beck. This stream starts near a place called Jericho. It then flows through Plasketlands farm, Mawbray, and Salta. Jordan Beck joins the Black Dub just a few meters before the Black Dub itself flows into the sea.
