History of Black Eagle
Black Eagle has an interesting past. It was once called "Little Chicago." This name came from the many factories and processing plants, called smelters and refineries, that were active in the area. These plants processed metals and other materials.
The official name "Black Eagle" was given when the post office opened in 1917. The town was named after the Black Eagle Falls on the nearby Missouri River. These falls got their name from Captain Meriwether Lewis, a famous explorer.
A large factory called the Boston & Montana smelter started being built in 1891. This big building became a key part of the town's look for many years. However, it was taken down on September 18, 1982.
