Black Rock (called Navajo: Tsézhįįh Deezlį́ in Navajo) is a small community in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. It's not a city, but a "census-designated place," which means it's a special area the government counts for population. In 2020, about 1,190 people lived there.

Where is Black Rock Located?
Black Rock is found on the Zuñi Reservation. It sits on the south side of the Zuñi River, about four miles east of the town of Zuñi. You can find it on the north side of NM Route 53.
Right next to the community on the east side is the Black Rock Reservoir. This reservoir was made in 1908 by building a dam across the Zuñi River. The dam has been rebuilt several times, most recently in the mid-1990s. Black Rock also has a small airstrip. It was built after World War II and paved in 1970.
The United States Census Bureau says that Black Rock covers about 1.8 square miles (4.66 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
A Look at Black Rock's History
Long ago, there was a natural spring at Black Rock. The Zuñi started farming in this area around 3000 years ago (about 950 BCE). They used the water from the spring to grow their crops.
The Zuñi people had a small village here that they used at certain times of the year. It was located on a lava flow, just north of the river. The Spanish explorers called this village "Ranchos de Zuñi."

In 2000, there were 1,252 people living in Black Rock. Most of the people living there, about 90%, were Native American. About 8% were White, and a small number were from other backgrounds.
Many households in Black Rock had children under 18 living with them. The average household had almost four people. The median age in Black Rock was 22 years old, which means it's a community with many young people.
