Scientific classification

The black mudfish (Neochanna diversus) is a special type of fish. It belongs to a fish family called Galaxiidae. You can only find this fish in the swamps and wetlands of the northern part of New Zealand's North Island. They live from a town called Kaitaia in the north down to the Mokau River in the south.

These mudfish can grow up to 12 centimeters (about 4.7 inches) long. Local Māori communities have traditionally valued the black mudfish. They prepare it using old cooking methods.

Where They Live

Black mudfish are found only in New Zealand. They prefer quiet, swampy areas and wetlands. These places are like watery forests or grassy marshes. They need these wet places to survive and thrive.

Sadly, a lot of these wetlands have disappeared. About 85% to 90% of them are gone. This is especially true in areas like Waikato and the Hauraki Plains. Losing their homes is a big problem for the mudfish.

Why They Are in Danger

The biggest danger to the black mudfish is the draining of wetlands. When wetlands are drained, the mudfish lose their homes. This problem has slowed down, which means the fish's numbers are not dropping as fast.

Other things also threaten the mudfish. Mosquitofish are a problem because they eat young mudfish. They also compete with adult mudfish for food. Pollution in the water can harm them too. Mud and dirt washing into their homes (called sedimentation) also makes it hard for them to live. Fires can also destroy their wetland homes.

Helping the Mudfish

Many people are working to protect the black mudfish. The New Zealand Department of Conservation is helping. Regional councils are also involved. They are working to protect the remaining wetlands. They are also trying to bring the mudfish back to places where they used to live. These efforts help the black mudfish survive for the future.
