Austrogomphus atratus Watson, 1991 |
The black vicetail (scientific name: Hemigomphus atratus) is a special type of dragonfly. It belongs to the Gomphidae family. This dragonfly is only found in one place: north-eastern Queensland, Australia. It loves to live near rainforest streams there.
Hemigomphus atratus is a small dragonfly. It has striking black and yellow colors. We don't know much about this species. Most of what we know comes from just one dragonfly. This single specimen was found near Tinaroo Dam in Queensland.
What's in a Name?
The scientific name atratus comes from a Latin word. It means "clothed in black." Tony Watson was the person who named this dragonfly. He chose the name because of its dark, brownish-black body.
