Blackwall is a small rural town in Tasmania, Australia. It's part of the West Tamar area, near Launceston. In 2016, about 270 people lived there. Blackwall is located on the western side of the Tamar River, close to Gravelly Beach.

Blackwall's Past

Blackwall got its name from a place called Blackwall in London, England. Just like its namesake, this Australian Blackwall was famous for building ships. A very large ship, the Harpley, was built here in 1847. It was the second-biggest ship made in Tasmania during the 1800s.

The area officially became known as a "locality" in 1966. A post office first opened nearby in 1911. It was later renamed Blackwall Post Office in 1968, but it closed in 1975.

Where is Blackwall?

The eastern edge of Blackwall is formed by the Tamar River. To the north, you'll find Stony Brook, which marks another boundary.
