A Look Back: History of Blackwells Mills

Blackwells Mills is located on the east side of the Millstone River. A long time ago, in 1746, a man named Peter Schenk built a mill here. Mills were very important back then for grinding grain into flour.

Later, the mill was owned by the Mercer family. In 1804, William Blackwell and his uncle, Captain Jacob Blackwell, bought the mill. William Blackwell also built a beautiful house nearby. This house was later moved to higher ground after a big storm called Hurricane Floyd. It is still standing today!

After William Blackwell passed away, his son John took over the mill. But John also died young, and his wife sold the mill in 1872 to Augustus VanZant. The mill burned down in 1885 but was quickly rebuilt. It was also fixed up in 1943.

The Blackwells Mills Canal House is a very old building. It is located right by the Delaware and Raritan Canal. It was built around the 1830s, at the same time the canal was being built.

This house was home to the "bridge tender." This person's job was to open the swing bridge when boats needed to pass through the canal. Then, they would close the bridge so that cars and people could cross over the canal again. The Canal House is an important part of the Delaware and Raritan Canal historic district. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
