Blakely Island got its name from Charles Wilkes. He was part of a big trip called the United States Exploring Expedition between 1838 and 1842. He named the island after Johnston Blakeley. Blakeley was a brave naval commander during the War of 1812.
Thatcher Bay is on the east side of the island. Long ago, the Samish tribe had seasonal villages there. Later, when Washington was still a territory, a mill town called Thatcher was built there. In 2014, old wooden structures that were harmful to the water were removed from Thatcher Bay.
