Blanche Blackwell (born Lindo; 9 December 1912 – 8 August 2017) was a well-known Jamaican woman. She was the mother of Chris Blackwell, who started Island Records. Blanche was also a good friend and source of ideas for famous writers Ian Fleming and Noël Coward.
Her Early Life
Blanche Lindo was born on 9 December 1912 in San José, Costa Rica. She was the third of four children born to Percy Lindo and Hilda Violet Lindo. Her family, the Lindo family, was a wealthy and important family in Jamaica. They had come from Spain many years ago.
Blanche's ancestor, Alexandre Lindo, moved to Kingston, Jamaica in the 1700s. His family became very rich as merchants and landowners.
Blanche was taught at home in Kingston until she was sixteen. Then, she went to a school called Garrett Hall to continue her education. In 1936, she married Middleton Joseph Blackwell. His family was famous for the food company Crosse & Blackwell. Their only child, Christopher, was born the next year. Blanche and Middleton divorced in 1949.
Friends with Famous Writers
Blanche Blackwell became well-known for her friendship with Ian Fleming. He was the author who created the James Bond spy novels. Ian Fleming lived near Blanche in Jamaica.
When they first met at a dinner party in 1956, they did not become friends right away. But over time, their friendship grew stronger. Blanche often gave Ian Fleming ideas for his stories. She was a great source of inspiration for him.
Blanche also became friends with other famous people of her time. This included the actor Errol Flynn, whom she met in Jamaica. She stayed very involved in her son Chris's life and work, often hosting parties and offering advice.
Her Later Years
Blanche Blackwell lived a long and interesting life. She passed away in London on 8 August 2017. She was 104 years old.
