His Early Life
Middleton Joseph Blackwell was born in Windsor, Berkshire, England, in August 1913. He was the only child of William Gordon and Irene Blackwell.
He went to school at St John's Beaumont School. Later, he studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst from 1931 to 1933. This is where many British Army officers are trained.
What He Did
In 1933, Middleton became a captain in the Irish Guards. This is a famous part of the British Army's Household Division.
He later became a major in The Jamaica Regiment. During World War II, he worked as a French Liaison Officer. This meant he helped connect the Allied forces in Vienna from 1939 to 1949.
After his military career, he worked in business. He was a director for companies like J. Wray and Nephew Ltd. and Lindo Brothers & Co.
In 1948, he became a manager for the Western Division of Crosse & Blackwell. This company made food products. He also worked for James Keiller & Son, which was known for its marmalade. These companies were later bought by Nestlé in 1960.
Later, in 1959, he became the president of Blackwell-Young Fancy Food Brokers. He was also the vice-president of Kehe Foods.
From 1988 to 1989, he held the special role of Chieftain of the O’Malley Clan. This is a traditional leadership position for a large Irish family group.
His Family Life
In 1936, Middleton married Blanche Blackwell. They had one child together, named Chris Blackwell. However, they divorced in 1949.
Later that same year, he married Edith Behr. With Edith, he had two daughters named Aileen Nina and Edith Leslie.
