Early Life and Move to Argentina
Blas Parera was born in Murcia, Spain. His parents were from Catalonia. In 1797, he moved to Buenos Aires, which is now the capital of Argentina.
He even helped defend the port of Buenos Aires. This was during the British invasions of the Río de la Plata, when the British tried to take over the area.
Composing the National Anthem
In 1813, Blas Parera composed the music for the Marcha Patriotica. This song later became the official Argentine National Anthem. He worked with a songwriter named Vicente López y Planes, who wrote the words.
His Music Career
Besides composing, Parera was also a talented organist. He played the organ in several important churches in Buenos Aires. These included the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Church of St. Ignatius, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy.
Family Life
On October 14, 1809, Blas Parera married Facunda del Rey. She was fifteen years old and had been one of his students. Before their marriage, Facunda lived in an orphanage called the Home of the Founding Children, where she sang in the choir. They were married in the church of San Nicolás de Bari.
Later Life
Blas Parera lived during the Romantic period in art and music. This was a time when artists focused on emotion and imagination.
He passed away in Mataró, Spain, on January 7, 1840.
