Blockbuster facts for kids
Blockbuster was a franchise of VHS & DVD rental stores.
It was established in 1985 in Dallas, Texas by David Cook as Blockbuster Video. In 1994 it was bought by media giant Viacom and in 1996, it's corporate name was renamed Blockbuster Entertainment Inc. and stores were renamed to just 'Blockbuster'. In 1997, David Cook was replaced by John Antioco as CEO and moved Blockbuster's headquarters from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Dallas, Texas. At it's peak in 2003, Blockbuster had over 9,000 store locations.
It launched the "Blockbuster By Mail" DVD service in 2004 to compete with Netflix and later started "Blockbuster On Demand" as an online-streaming service. In 2007, James Keyes replaced Antioco as CEO and started a retail-oriented model for Blockbuster stores.
In 2011, Blockbuster announced Bankruptcy and got sold to cable provider Dish Network for re-construction, moving to Englewood, Colorado and bringing in Michael Kelly, a Dish executive, as Blockbuster's President. It's corporate name was then renamed Blockbuster LLC. Dish used Blockbuster as an outlet for sale of their products until 2013-14, when they disestablished and closed all of it's company-owned store locations worldwide.
As of 2016, one website shows 12 franchise-owned stores remaining in operation in the USA.
