Bloodstained Oz is a thrilling novella (a short novel) that takes the classic world of Oz and turns it into something much darker! Written by Christopher Golden and James A. Moore, and illustrated by Glenn Chadbourne, this book was first released in 2006. It's a special, limited edition, which means only a certain number of copies were made.
This unique story was even nominated for the Bram Stoker Award in 2006, which is a big honor for horror stories. Unlike the cheerful stories by L. Frank Baum, Bloodstained Oz imagines the Land of Oz as a scary place for adults, not a children's story.
Because it's an Oz story and a horror novel, it quickly became a collector's item. Both first editions sold out fast, and there are no plans to print more. Some copies have even sold for hundreds of dollars online!
What is Bloodstained Oz About?
The story of Bloodstained Oz mixes the real world with the magical, scary world of Oz. It starts in the 1930s in Kansas, during the terrible Dust Bowl storms. People from Kansas suddenly find themselves in a very different, frightening version of the Land of Oz.
Characters and Creatures
In this dark Oz, familiar characters like the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion might not be as helpful as you remember. Instead, the land is filled with terrifying creatures. Imagine vampire flying monkeys, scary creatures with glowing green eyes, and other unbelievable horrors!
A farm girl named Gayle Franklin and her family, a person who escaped from jail named Hank Burnside, and a Roma family (Elisa, Stefan, and their baby Jeremiah) all come face-to-face with these monsters from Oz. These creatures have taken over Oz, and now they want to take over Earth too!
Special Editions
Bloodstained Oz was only released in two very special, limited first editions. This means only a small number of copies were ever made, making them rare and valuable.
- 500 numbered hardcovers. These books were signed by both authors, Christopher Golden and James A. Moore. ISBN: 0-9766339-6-5
- 26 lettered hardcovers (from A to Z). These were signed by the authors, the illustrator Glenn Chadbourne, and the person who wrote the introduction, Ray Garton. Each of these super rare books came in a special handmade box. Inside the box was one of 26 original color drawings of the Tin Woodman by Glenn Chadbourne.
