History of Bloomfield
How Bloomfield Started
The town of Bloomfield was officially created on January 13, 1816. The Virginia General Assembly, which is Virginia's state legislature, made this decision. The town got its name from the many beautiful wildflowers that grew in the fields nearby. These fields were close to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Bloomfield During the Civil War
Bloomfield played a small part in the American Civil War.
- In 1862, during the Battle of Unison, soldiers from the Confederate States Army camped in Bloomfield. These soldiers were led by a general named J.E.B. Stuart.
- Later in the war, a famous Confederate leader named John S. Mosby visited Bloomfield. He was known as "the Gray Ghost."
- Mosby and his group, called the Rangers, came to Bloomfield to divide up a large sum of money. They had taken about $173,000 from a Union payroll train in West Virginia. This event is known as the Greenback Raid.
