Bloomingdale's Past: A Look Back in Time

Bloomingdale was first settled a long time ago, before 1850. Some of the early settlers included John Vickers and John Carney.

In 1884, the Bloomingdale School was started. It became a place where teachers were trained, even for people from far away. But things changed in 1890 when the railway was built through a nearby town called Brandon. Many businesses moved to Brandon to be closer to the railroad.

Because of this, Bloomingdale started to become smaller. The post office closed in 1910, and the school closed in 1920. Students then went to school in Brandon. Bloomingdale stayed quiet until the 1960s. Then, it started to grow again as people moved there to live and work in nearby Tampa. This made it a "bedroom community," meaning many people live there but commute to work in a bigger city.
