French missionaries gave Blue Mounds its name. They saw three nearby hills that looked a bit blue!

Blue Mounds is located about 25 miles (40 km) west of Madison. It sits in Dane County, near the border of Iowa County.
The village is close to some cool natural spots. These include Brigham Park, the amazing Cave of the Mounds, and Blue Mound State Park. Blue Mound State Park is actually the highest point in southern Wisconsin!
The village covers about 0.91 square miles (2.36 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.

The Military Ridge State Trail passes right through the village. This trail is 39 miles (63 km) long. It's a great place for biking and hiking. It was built on an old railroad path.
Horribly Hilly Hundreds Bike Ride
Each year, a tough bike ride called the Horribly Hilly Hundreds starts in Blue Mounds. Riders can choose a 100K or 200K course. The ride ends with a challenging climb up to Blue Mound State Park. This event happens the Saturday before Father's Day.
Festival of the Mounds
The Festival of the Mounds is a fun event held each fall. It takes place at Mounds View Park. The festival includes a chicken wing cook-off and a softball tournament. There's also a chicken barbecue and live music bands.
Step Into The Past Rendezvous
The Step Into The Past Rendezvous is a historical event. It used to be run by the Blue Mounds Area Historical Society. This event features tepees and old-style tents. You can see demonstrations of spinning and tanning. There's also a tomahawk throw and a candy cannon for kids!
Winter Fun at Blue Mound State Park
In winter, Blue Mound State Park hosts special events. They have a Candlelight Ski and Hike. This happens on the first Saturday of January and February.
