Library History
When the Bayport and Blue Point school districts joined together in 1952, the library also officially became the Bayport-Blue Point Library. It is a public library overseen by the New York State Education Department.
The library's first books were all donated. People say the books were collected from homes using a wheelbarrow! Today, the library's logo is a wheelbarrow full of books. This honors its beginnings.
The library was first in a room at the Blue Point School. This is now Blue Point Elementary School. Later, it moved to different spots. In 1957, the current building was built at 203 Blue Point Avenue. The building has been made almost three times bigger with two additions. Until 1970, the library was run completely by volunteers. It was one of the last volunteer-run libraries in New York State.
Future Library Plans
In December 2018, voters approved a plan to buy a new building for the library. This building is the St. Ursula Center at 186 Middle Road in Blue Point. It used to be a home for the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk. The plan is to change this building into a modern public library. It will have more space for books and programs. It will also have new technology and an outdoor community garden.
