The Blue Stack Mountains, also called the Bluestack Mountains or the Croaghgorms (meaning "the blue stacks" in Irish), are a major mountain range. You can find them in the south of County Donegal, Ireland. These mountains act like a natural wall. They separate the southern parts of the county, like Donegal Town and Ballyshannon, from towns further north and west, such as Dungloe and Letterkenny. To travel between these areas, you usually go through a pass called the Barnesmore Gap.
Discovering the Blue Stack Mountains
The Blue Stack Mountains are a beautiful and important part of County Donegal. They offer amazing views and are a popular spot for hiking. The name "Blue Stack" comes from how they look from a distance. On a clear day, they often appear to have a blue tint.
The Tallest Peaks
The highest mountain in the Blue Stack range is Croaghgorm. It stands tall at 674 meters (about 2,211 feet) above sea level. Imagine a building over 200 stories high – that's how tall Croaghgorm is!
There are many other important mountains nearby. Some of these include:
- Ardnageer, which is 642 meters high.
- Croaghanirwore, reaching 548 meters.
- Croaghbarnes, at 499 meters.
- Croaghblane, standing at 641 meters.
- Croaghnageer, at 571 meters.
- Croveenananta, which is 476 meters tall.
- Gaugin Mountain, at 565 meters.
- Lacroagh, 403 meters high.
- Lavagh More, almost as tall as Croaghgorm at 671 meters.
- Lavagh Beg, close behind at 650 meters.
One special mountain is Silver Hill, which is 600 meters high. It's known for being the smallest mountain in Ireland to reach the 600-meter mark. This makes it part of a special group of peaks in mountain classifications.
