Robert John "Golden Boy" Goldham (May 12, 1922 – September 6, 1991) was a Canadian ice hockey player and broadcaster. He was known as "Golden Boy" from his time with the Toronto Marlboros. People also called him the "Second Goalie." This was because he was super brave at blocking shots.
Hockey Career
Bob Goldham started his amazing hockey journey in the National Hockey League (NHL). He first played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1941. Before that, he played for the Hershey Bears in the AHL. After winning the Stanley Cup in 1942, he was even named to an AHL All-Star team.
During World War II, Bob served in the Royal Canadian Navy. After the war, he came back to the Maple Leafs. Later, he was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks in 1947.
In 1950, he joined the Detroit Red Wings. He became an Assistant Captain there in 1952. Bob played until the 1956 season, when he retired.
Stanley Cup Wins
Bob Goldham was a big winner! He won the Stanley Cup five times during his career.
- With the Toronto Maple Leafs: 1942 and 1947.
- With the Detroit Red Wings: 1952, 1954, and 1955.
He was also chosen for the NHL All-Star Games many times. These included 1947, 1949, 1950, 1952, and 1954. In 1955, he was part of the NHL 2nd All-Star Team.
Coaching
After playing, Bob also spent some time coaching. He coached the Toronto St. Michael's Majors during the 1959–60 season.
Life After Hockey
After retiring from playing, Bob Goldham became a TV sports commentator. He worked on Hockey Night in Canada for CBC. He also worked on local Toronto Maple Leaf games for CHCH-TV.
Bob was married to Eleanor. They had three daughters named Patricia, Susan, and Barbara. He passed away on September 6, 1991, at 69 years old.
In 2015, Bob Goldham was honored for his achievements. He was added to Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
