Bob Hitchens (born January 30, 1952 – died July 7, 2020) was an amazing American college football player. He was a talented running back for Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, from 1971 to 1973. He is remembered for his incredible skills on the field.

During his time at Miami University, Bob Hitchens was a star player. He ran for a total of 3,118 yards and scored 34 touchdowns. He was a key player for three years.

In 1972, Hitchens had an outstanding season. He rushed for 1,370 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. Because of his great performance, he earned AP All-American honors. He was also named the Mid-American Conference offensive player of the year. Miami RedHawks also recognized him as their athlete of the year. His 1,370 rushing yards were the most in the MAC conference.

As a senior, Hitchens was a co-captain. He helped lead Miami to a perfect 11-0 season. This amazing year included winning the Mid-American Conference title. They also won the Tangerine Bowl against the University of Florida.

Hitchens holds several records for Miami RedHawks football statistical leaders. He has the single-game record for most rushes with 45 carries. This happened in a game against the South Carolina Gamecocks in 1972. He also ranks high in career rushing attempts, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns. He had 14 games where he ran for over 100 yards.

In 1980, Bob Hitchens was honored. He was inducted into the Miami University Hall of Fame.

Bob Hitchens' Professional Football Career

After college, Bob Hitchens played professional football. He spent two years playing for NFL teams. These teams included the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bob Hitchens' Coaching Career

Later, Hitchens became an assistant football coach. He coached at Carnegie Mellon University. He helped them win three President's Conference championships. They also reached the semi-finals twice in the NCAA District III playoffs. From 1980 to 1987, he returned to Miami University. There, he served as an assistant football coach for his old team.
