Robert Eugene Sykes (born March 15, 1927 – died August 4, 2020) was an American football player. He played as a fullback for the Washington Redskins in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the NFL, he played college football at San Jose State.
Robert Sykes' Early Life and Education
Robert Sykes was born in Oakland, California. He went to high school at St. Aloysius College in New Orleans. This school is now known as Brother Martin High School.
After high school, Sykes joined the United States Army Air Forces. He served during World War II. He held the rank of private first class.
After his time in the military, Sykes went back to California. He enrolled at Santa Rosa Junior College. He played on their football team in 1948 and 1949. Later, he transferred to San Jose State College. He played for the San Jose State Spartans football team in 1950 and 1951.
His Pro Football Career
Robert Sykes was not chosen in the 1952 NFL draft. However, he still got a chance to play pro football. He signed with the Washington Redskins as a free agent.
He played in four games for the Redskins. He started one game as a fullback. During his time with the team, he carried the ball four times for 10 yards. He also caught one pass for five yards.
Life After Football
After he stopped playing football, Robert Sykes became a businessman. He owned a car dealership in Santa Clara, California. It was a Dodge dealership called Bob Sykes Dodge.
Robert Sykes passed away on August 4, 2020. He was 93 years old. He died in Laguna Niguel, California.
