As an MP, Wareing often spoke about international issues. He was especially interested in the Balkans region. He was Chairman of the All-Party British-Yugoslav Parliamentary Group. In 1995, he met with Bosnian Serb leaders. These meetings were about the conflict in Bosnia.
In 1997, Robert Wareing faced a problem. He was suspended from the Labour Party. This was because of questions about his work as a lobbyist. A committee in the House of Commons looked into this. They found he had not declared some business interests. He was suspended from the Commons for one week.
Wareing was known for his views on Serbia. He was sometimes called "Serbian Bob." He was one of the few Labour MPs to vote against the NATO action in Kosovo in 1999. He was also part of the Socialist Campaign Group. This group often disagreed with the government. In 2006, he was one of 12 Labour MPs. They supported an inquiry into the Iraq War.
