Her Early Life and Training
Born in Chicago, Illinois, into a Jewish family, Bobbi Brown went to New Trier High School. She then studied at Emerson College in Boston. There, she earned a degree in theatrical makeup and photography. In 1980, she moved to New York City to work as a professional makeup artist. Bobbi became famous for her makeup style, which used soft and natural colors. This was very different from the bright colors that were popular at the time.
Creating Makeup Lines
Bobbi Brown Essentials: A Natural Start
In 1990, Bobbi Brown worked with a chemist to create ten lipstick colors that looked very natural. In 1991, she and her husband teamed up with another couple to launch their brand, Bobbi Brown Essentials. It first appeared in a store called Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. Bobbi thought she might sell 100 lipsticks in a month. Instead, she sold 100 in just one day! The next year, she introduced foundation sticks with a yellow tone.
A big company called Estée Lauder bought Bobbi Brown's company in 1995. Bobbi stayed on as an employee and kept her creative control over the makeup line.
In 2011, the very first stand-alone Bobbi Brown Cosmetics store opened in Auckland, New Zealand. It even had a makeup school inside. By 2012, her makeup products made up about ten percent of Estée Lauder Companies' total sales. In January 2014, there were about thirty Bobbi Brown stores around the world.
In December 2016, it was announced that Bobbi Brown would step down from the company by the end of that year. After this, she continued to be active in the beauty world. She created new product lines, hosted beauty podcasts, taught a makeup MasterClass, and managed her website, JustBobbi.com.
Jones Road: A New Chapter in Clean Beauty
In late October 2020, Bobbi Brown launched her second beauty brand, Jones Road. This launch happened 25 years after she first sold her original line. This was because of an agreement she had signed with Estée Lauder. Jones Road is known as a "clean beauty" brand. This means its products are made with simple, safe ingredients.
According to Yahoo, which reviewed the brand, Jones Road offers a carefully chosen selection of makeup and skincare. This approach helps customers not feel overwhelmed by too many choices. The first products included balms, moisturizing cream colors, mascaras, glosses, washes, eye shadow, and eye pencils. They were also sold together in a special starter kit.
In a September 2024 interview with the Financial Times, it was shared that Jones Road's revenue in its first year was $20 million. It was also expected to reach over $150 million in that financial year, with its value nearing $1 billion.
Other Exciting Products
