CNBC is an American TV channel that shares news about business. It is owned by NBCUniversal News Group, which is part of Comcast. The channel shows business news and analysis during the day. This is when the stock markets are usually open.

When the markets are closed, CNBC shows documentaries and reality TV shows about business. Sometimes, it also airs sports events from NBC Sports. CNBC has a website, CNBC.com, where you can find news articles, videos, and podcasts. Some parts of the website need a subscription to access.

CNBC's main studios are in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. They also have a studio at the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square, New York City.

CNBC started on April 17, 1989. It was first called the Consumer News and Business Channel. It was a partnership between NBC and Cablevision. Later, NBC bought a rival channel called Financial News Network (FNN) and combined it with CNBC. NBC then took full ownership of CNBC.

Besides its channels in the U.S., CNBC also has international channels like CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia. It also works with other channels around the world. In 2023, CNBC had more viewers overall than its main rival, Fox Business.

How CNBC Started and Grew

CNBC's beginnings go back to a channel called Satellite Program Network (SPN), which started in 1979. It showed old movies and educational programs. Later, this channel became Tempo Television.

NBC decided to use Tempo's broadcast space. On April 17, 1989, the channel was relaunched as the Consumer News and Business Channel. NBC and Cablevision first owned CNBC together. Its first headquarters were in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

At first, CNBC had trouble getting cable companies to carry it. Many companies already had the older Financial News Network (FNN). By 1990, CNBC was in only 17 million homes. This was less than half of FNN's reach.

FNN faced financial problems and went up for sale in 1991. CNBC won the bid to buy FNN for $154.3 million. They combined the two channels. This deal helped CNBC reach over 40 million homes. NBC then bought Cablevision's share, taking full ownership of CNBC.

In June 1995, CNBC launched CNBC Asia in Hong Kong. In March 1996, CNBC Europe started in London. In 1997, CNBC partnered with Dow Jones, a big financial news company. This meant they shared content with The Wall Street Journal and other Dow Jones news services. Dow Jones also combined its international business channels with CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, CNBC's viewership grew a lot as the stock market did well. But after the "dot-com bubble" burst, CNBC's ratings went down. They slowly recovered over the next few years.

In October 2003, CNBC moved its main offices from Fort Lee to a new studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. NBC Universal took full control of CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia again in 2005.

In 2007, CNBC Africa was launched. CNBC also started the "CNBC Investor Network." This uses webcams in trading rooms to interview traders live. In December 2007, CNBC partnered with Yahoo! Finance to share content.

In 2011, CNBC won an award for its "CNBC 4D" technology. This allows presenters to interact with 3D graphics. In 2013, CNBC started producing Nightly Business Report, a popular business news show for public television.

In October 2015, CNBC hosted a debate for Republican presidential candidates. This debate was watched by 14 million viewers, which was the highest number of viewers for any CNBC program at that time.

In 2020, CNBC's online videos were watched 1.92 billion times across different platforms. In September 2021, CNBC made a new deal with Jim Cramer, a well-known host. This deal included creating new digital content and a subscription service called "CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer."

In December 2023, CNBC updated its logo and on-air graphics. This was the first time its logo changed since 1996. The new logo uses the updated NBC peacock design.

CNBC Stores

CNBC has partnered with Paradies Lagardère to open retail stores in U.S. airports. These stores are called CNBC News, CNBC Express, and CNBC SmartShop. They sell CNBC-branded items, snacks, and drinks.

High Definition TV

On October 10, 2007, CNBC HD was launched. This is a 1080i high-definition television version of the channel. It first became available on DirecTV.

On October 13, 2014, CNBC started broadcasting in a full 16:9 widescreen format. This made its picture look more modern and matched its international channels.
