After college, Orman moved to Berkeley, California, and worked as a waitress. In 1980, she wanted to open her own restaurant and borrowed $52,000 from her friends. Since she was new to investing, she gave the money to a professional at a company called Merrill Lynch to invest for her.

Unfortunately, the broker put her money into a very risky type of investment, and she lost it all. Orman decided to learn about finance herself so this wouldn't happen again. She got a job at Merrill Lynch and trained to become an investment expert. There, she learned that the investment her first broker chose was not right for someone in her situation. After her training, she worked at Merrill Lynch until 1983. Then, she moved to another company called Prudential Securities.

In 1987, Orman started her own company, the Suze Orman Financial Group, in Emeryville, California. She ran the company until 1997.

Orman has written many books about how to manage money. Some of her most famous books include The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom (1997), The Money Book for the Young Fabulous and Broke (2005), and Women & Money (2007). She even wrote a children's book in 2017 called The Adventures of Billy & Penny.

Her TV show, The Suze Orman Show, started on CNBC in 2002 and became very popular. On the show, she gave people advice about saving, investing, and getting out of debt. In 2008, after being on The Oprah Winfrey Show, she offered her book Women and Money for free online, and nearly two million people downloaded it.
