History of Boca Velázquez
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it is controlled by the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of Boca Velázquez and a nearby barrio called Descalabrado was 1,083 people. This helped the government understand how many people lived in different areas.
