Bocconcini facts for kids

Bocconcini are small, yummy balls of mozzarella cheese! The word "bocconcini" means "small mouthfuls" in Italian. This cheese is soft, white, and doesn't have a hard outside rind. It's a mild cheese that first came from Naples, Italy.
Long ago, bocconcini were only made from the milk of water buffalo. But today, they are usually made from a mix of water buffalo and cow's milk. Bocconcini are often sold in a liquid called whey or in water. They have a soft, spongy feel and easily soak up other flavors.

How Bocconcini Are Made
Bocconcini are made using a special Italian method called pasta filata. This means "spun paste." To make the cheese, curds (the solid part of milk) are dipped into hot whey. Then, cheesemakers knead, pull, and stretch the cheese. This process gives bocconcini their unique soft texture.
Each bocconcino is usually about the size, shape, and color of a hard-boiled egg. Because of this, some people even call them uova di bufala, which means "Buffalo eggs."
Smaller Sizes
You can also find smaller versions of bocconcini! These are called bambini bocconcini, meaning "baby" bocconcini. They are about the size of large grapes or cherries. This tiny size is also known as ciliegine, which means "small cherries."
Different Types of Bocconcini
Bocconcini can be made from different kinds of milk.
Buffalo Milk Bocconcini
Bocconcini made from water buffalo milk are still produced in some parts of Italy, like the areas around Naples, Caserta, and Salerno. Sometimes, fresh Mozzarella di Bufala Campana is mixed with fresh cream to make a special kind called bocconcini alla panna di bufala. There's also a specific type called Bocconcino di Bufala Campana DOP. The "DOP" part means it's a special cheese with a "Protected Designation of Origin," ensuring it comes from a specific area and is made in a traditional way.
Cow's Milk Bocconcini
Bocconcini are also made from whole cow's milk. These often have more liquid inside them compared to regular mozzarella. This extra liquid gives them a very soft feel, similar to another cow's milk mozzarella called fior di latte.
How to Enjoy Bocconcini
You can find bocconcini in most Italian supermarkets. They are very popular in a fresh salad called caprese salad, which usually has tomatoes, basil, and bocconcini. They are also often served with pasta dishes.
