Boeseman's rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) is a very colorful fish. It is also known as the Boesemani rainbowfish. This fish is part of the family called Melanotaeniidae, which includes many types of rainbowfish.

Where Do Boeseman's Rainbowfish Live?

These special fish are found only in one area. They live in the Ayamaru Lakes and the small rivers that flow into them. This region is in the mountains of the Bird's Head Peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia. This means they are endemic to that specific place.

Who Named This Fish?

The scientific name boesemani was given to honor a Dutch fish expert. His name was Marinus Boeseman. He was the person who first collected these fish for scientific study.

Many people enjoy keeping Boeseman's rainbowfish in their aquariums. They are loved for their amazing colors and calm nature. Unlike many other rainbowfish, their color pattern is unique. The back half of their body is often orange-red. The front half is usually bluish-grey or purple. These colors can be very clear and striking.

Size and Color Changes

Boeseman's rainbowfish can grow quite large. They often reach over 10 cm (3.9 in) (about 4 inches) long. This happens if they get the right food and clean water. Like most rainbowfish, they can change how bright their colors are. Their color brightness can show how they are feeling or if they are healthy. Colors are often brightest at night.

Living with Other Fish

These fish are very friendly. It's best to keep them in groups, with more females than males. They get along well with many other types of fish. Good tank mates include other rainbowfish, barbs, tetras, corydoras, snails, gouramis, danios, discus, guppys, swordtails, and loaches.

Caring for Your Rainbowfish

Boeseman's rainbowfish are generally strong and easy to care for. They prefer water that is slightly alkaline (not too acidic). However, they can sometimes get a sickness called columnaris.

Shrimp and Rainbowfish

Be careful if you want to keep small freshwater shrimp with them. Tiny shrimp like Caridina and Neocaridina might be seen as food. Larger shrimp, such as ghost shrimp, vampire shrimp, amano shrimp, and bamboo shrimp, can live with them. It's best to add adult shrimp first, then smaller rainbowfish. Make sure there are plenty of hiding spots for the shrimp and open areas for the rainbowfish to swim.

What Do Boeseman's Rainbowfish Eat?

These fish are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and meat. They are not picky eaters and will usually eat whatever food you give them. However, they prefer foods that are more like meat. For them to be super healthy, give them different kinds of food. This includes dry flakes, frozen foods, and even live foods. This makes sure they get all the important nutrients.

Rainbowfish have smaller mouths compared to their bodies. So, make sure their food pieces are not too big. Good foods include krill flakes, Vibra Bites, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.

How Long Do They Live?

Boeseman's rainbowfish usually live for about 5 to 8 years. This depends on how warm their water is. Some fish keepers have even reported their fish living for 13 to 15 years!
