Bogomolets National Medical University (often called NMU) is a famous medical school in Kyiv, Ukraine. It was started way back in 1841 by the Russian Tsar Nicolas I. The university is named after a well-known scientist named Alexander A. Bogomolets.

NMU is a top place for medical training in Ukraine. Over 10,000 students study here, including about 1,300 students from 56 different countries! Around 1,200 teachers work at the university. Degrees from NMU are recognized by big organizations like the WHO and UNESCO. This means their medical training is trusted worldwide. The university offers many courses for students who are just starting or who want to study more after their first degree.

History of the University

Bogomolets National Medical University began as a small group of students and teachers. They were part of the medical faculty at St. Volodymyr University. In 1840, a special order was signed to create a medical faculty there. Classes officially started in 1841 with 29 students. The medical faculty had 10 different departments. By 1844, three special clinics were opened. These clinics helped students learn about treating different illnesses and injuries.

Many important people have studied at Bogomolets National Medical University. Here are a few of them:

  • 1860: Vladimir Betz was a Russian and Ukrainian scientist. He was famous for discovering special brain cells. These cells are now called Betz cells after him.
  • 1925: Favst Shkaravsky was a doctor and expert in the Soviet army. He is known for helping with the autopsy of Adolf Hitler in 1945.
  • 1946: Isaac Trachtenberg became a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
  • Maryna Poroshenko was the First Lady of Ukraine. This means she was the wife of the president of Ukraine.
  • 1989: Olga Bogomolets is a singer, songwriter, and doctor. She also ran for president.
  • Oleh Musiy became the Minister of Healthcare (Ukraine). This is a very important job in the government.
  • Elena Teplitskaya is a doctor, psychologist, and academic.
  • Serhiy Dyachenko is a psychiatrist, who is a doctor for mental health. He also writes screenplays and fantasy books.
