Bojnord is an important city in Iran. It is the capital of North Khorasan province. The city is about 701 kilometers (436 miles) away from Tehran, the capital of Iran. It is also 237 kilometers (147 miles) from Mashhad.

History of Bojnord

Early Times

Local stories say that the Qarai Turks controlled this area. This happened after the Mongol invasion in the 1200s.

Founding the City

Bojnord is a newer city. It was likely built by the Safavids. They were a powerful ruling family in Iran. They settled the Kurdish Şadiyan tribe here. This helped protect the Safavid borders from other groups. The city used to have a strong wall around it. It also had eleven neighborhoods, markets, and four mosques.

Challenges and Rebuilding

In 1849, a big revolt happened. This event caused a lot of damage to the city. Later, in 1876, a traveler named G. C. Napier visited Bojnord. He noted that a Kurdish leader ruled the city. This leader did not collect taxes. Instead, he provided military help to the government in Tehran.

Bojnord faced more challenges. Strong earthquakes hit the city in 1896 and 1929. These quakes destroyed much of the city and its surroundings. After these events, the city was rebuilt in a modern way. It did not have its old walls or defenses anymore. In 1997, another strong earthquake, measuring 6.5, caused a lot of damage. Many people were hurt or lost their lives.
