The community of Bolt got its name from an important person in its early days. A post office was first opened in Bolt in 1902. The person in charge of this post office was named Mr. George Washington Bolt. He was the first postmaster, which means he was responsible for all the mail services in the area. The community was named after him to honor his role.

Bolt is the birthplace of a well-known country music singer named Little Jimmy Dickens. He was born in Bolt in 1920. Little Jimmy Dickens became famous for his fun songs and his small size. He was a member of the Grand Ole Opry, a very famous country music show.
