Bombay High facts for kids
Bombay High is a very important place in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Mumbai, India. It's like a giant treasure chest under the ocean that holds lots of oil and natural gas. This area is called an offshore oilfield because it's far from land. It also has facilities that act like a refinery to process some of the oil.
Discovering Bombay High
Bombay High was found by a team of experts from India and the Soviet Union (which is now mostly Russia). They discovered this huge oil and gas reserve in 1974. This discovery was a big deal for India because it meant the country could produce more of its own energy.
How Oil and Gas are Found and Used
Oil and gas are found deep below the seabed. Special platforms, like the ones you see in the picture, are built in the ocean to drill down and bring the oil and gas up to the surface.
- Oilfield and Gas Field: Bombay High is both an oilfield and a gas field. This means it produces both crude oil and natural gas.
- Crude Oil: The oil that comes out of the ground is called crude oil. It's not ready to be used yet.
- Refining: Crude oil needs to be sent to special factories called refineries. At these refineries, the crude oil is cleaned and processed to make useful products like petrol (gasoline), diesel, and other chemicals.
- Transportation: In the past, some of the crude oil from Bombay High was sent to the Mathura Oil Refinery. But now, it's transported to other refineries across India to be turned into the fuel we use every day.
Bombay High plays a crucial role in providing energy for India, helping to power homes, cars, and industries.
